AS112
Since September 2024, the Vienna Internet eXchange supports the AS112 Project to make the Domain Name System (DNS) more efficient and resilient.
The AS112 Project is a global anycast network. It consists of hundreds of computers ("nodes") installed by major network operators and Internet Exchange Points at numerous locations. The Vienna Internet eXchange has also integrated an AS112 node into its infrastructure.
AS112 responds to reverse DNS queries relating to private IP addresses - for example, home or company networks with address spaces in accordance with RFC 1918. The globally distributed AS112 nodes are able to process such queries quickly. This reduces data traffic in the DNS, making the overall system faster and more stable.
AS112 on the Vienna Internet eXchange
- The AS112 service is automatically available to all participants who use the VIX route servers.
- Configuration changes are not necessary.
- Bilateral peering with AS112 is not possible.
What is Anycast?
Anycast is a technology for load balancing of intensively used services. For this purpose, the IP address of a service is announced by several servers ("instances"), which are usually located in different network areas. Network traffic control is then used to distribute the requests among the individual instances and optimize response times. The failure of one instance does not affect the service, as all other instances automatically take over the traffic.
